The Platone consortium partners E.DSO and RWTH Aachen University jointly organised the webinar ‘Is Open Source the next Big Thing in Electricity Distribution?’

Platone’s coordinator Mr Antonello Monti opened the event, highlighting the fundamental role of Open-Source as fast enabler of innovative solutions, bringing huge savings in network expansion, accelerating the establishment of flexibility market, and supporting customer engagement. The event featured a video demo session on the Platone Open Framework, showcasing an example of Open-Source fostering research and innovation in the energy sector. The DSO Technical Platform and the Platone Architecture seamlessly integrate into existing distribution system operators infrastructure to enable the key role of customers and flexibility in the energy transition. The testing and validation in the large-scale Demos in Italy, Greece and Germany demonstrate how open source supports building synergies among System Operators (SOs) and paves the way to widely applicable, standardised, and mature market solutions.

The importance of European actions, such as Horizon-funded initiatives, in the digitalisation of the energy sector was stressed by the participation of Mr Rolf Riemenschneider, Head of Sector IoT at the European Commission. The panel of the workshop involved experts and representatives from all across the energy value chain, including Platone’s partner Areti, who brought to the table the insights gained while leading the Italian Demo of the project. The outcome of the discussion was clear: Yes, open source is the big thing for SOs.
